Isaiah 53: 1-12

1 Who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

3 He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.
Like one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he took up our infirmities
       and carried our sorrows,
yet we considered him stricken by God,
       smitten by him, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
       he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
       each of us has turned to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
       the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
       yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.

8 By oppression  and judgment he was taken away.
And who can speak of his descendants?
       For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was stricken.

9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the LORD makes  his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

11 After the suffering of his soul,
       he will see the light of life  and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

The Book of Isaiah was written by the Prophet Isaiah approximately 700 BC - 690 BC.  His theme was salvation, ushering in the divine inspiration of scripture and the possibility of the supernatural.

One of Isaiah's purposes was to declare God's displeasure with and judgment upon sin in Judah, Israel, and the surrounding nations.

Perhaps the greater purpose was to lay a foundation of hope and promise for the faithful remnant of God's people.

The promises:
  • restoration
  • redemption
  • salvation by grace (unmerited favor)
  • righteousness
  • peace
  • comfort
  • God's triumph in all areas, in spite of suffering
Isaiah prophesied for all future ages, predicting both the first and second advent of Christ.

Isaiah's very name means "salvation."  A salvation not only for those of his day, but also a salvation of the peoples of the nations for all time.

Rebuilding The 3rd Temple

(For My House
Shall Be Called
A House of Prayer for all Nations)

(Isaiah 56:7)

The 3rd Temple was designated by the Jewish State of Israel to be reconstructed by The Temple Institute, 2009.

The Temple Institute's work "touches
upon the history of the Holy Temple's past, an understanding of the present day, and the Divine promise of Israel's future."

Daniel 9:24-25

24 "Seventy 'sevens' are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring an everlasting rightousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy."
25 "Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem, until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven 'sevens,' and sixty-two 'sevens.' It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble, ...

Rev 1:1-3

1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place.  He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,
2 who testifies to everything he saw--that is the word of God, and the testimony of Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart, what is written in it, because the time is near.

Rev 11:1-2

11:1 I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, "Go and measure the Temple of God and the altar, and count the worshipers there.
11:2 But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.

The 2nd Temple
(Reconstructed circa 516 BCE & 70 BCE
by King Herod)

The Bible tells about the beautiful Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem where the Jews worshiped God.

Jesus taught in the Second Temple, reconstructed by Herod.

Construction of a new temple was begun in 535; after a hiatus, work resumed circa 521, with completion 516 and dedicated 515.

According to the Book of Ezra (circa 538 BC - 457 BC) (wrote Books of  1 & 2 Chronicles & Nehemiah) rebuilding of the temple was authorized by King Cyrus the Great of Persia and ratified by Darius the Great of Persia.

(Note: while Nehemiah was rebuilding the gates of Jerusalem, Ezra was rebuilidng the Temple.)

The Romans destroyed Jerusalem and its second temple on 4 August 70 CE, ending the Great Jewish Revolt that began in 66 CE.

Ezra 2:1-67

2:1-67 Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles...
The list of the men of the people of Israel:
...
2:68 When they arrived at the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, some of the heads of the families gave freewill offerings toward the rebuilding of the house of God on its site.
2:69 According to their ability they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 drachmas of gold, 5,000 minas of silver, and 100 priestly garments.

Ezra 3:1-13  (Rebuilding the Altar and Rebuilding the Temple).

3:11 With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD:
"He is good; and his love to Israel endures forever."

Ezra 6:16 (Dedication of the Temple)

6:16 Then the people of Israel--the priests, the Levites and the rest of the exiles--celebrated the dedication of the house of God with joy.

Ezra 7:11 & 7:24 (King Artaxerxes Letter to Ezra)

7:11 This is a copy of the letter King Artaxerxes had given to Ezra...
...
7:24 "You are also to know that you have no authority to impose taxes, tribute or duty on any of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants, or other workers at this house of God."

Rebuilding the Gates of Jerusalem
(Book of Nehemiah)
circa 423 BC
(Reign of King Artexeres,
& Queen Ester)

I included this portion of the Book of Nehemiah, simply because it reflected the attitude of Nehemiah's heart toward the House of God, its destruction and fulfilling the will of the Lord to rebuild it.

This was not the rebuilding of the Temple, but rather Jerusalem, and it's gates.

This attitude holds true even today as the Third Temple is currently being reconstructed in it's initial format that God set down in the Book of Exodus to Moses, for the return of the King Jesus to rule and reign forever.

Nehemiah's Prayer

Nehemiah 1:1-11

1 The words of Nehemiah, son of Hecaliah:
2 ...one of my brothers came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, "Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace.  The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned down with fire.
4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept.  For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of Heaven.
5 Then I said, "Oh LORD God of Heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him, and obey his commands,
6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel....
,,,
11 I was cupbearer to the King.

Nehemiah 2:2-18

2 ...the King asked me, "Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill?  This can be nothing but sadness of heart."
3..."Why should my face not look sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and the gates have been destroyed by fire?"
4 The king said to me "What is it you want?"
5..."If it pleases the king,,,let him send me to Judah where my fathers are buried so that I can rebuild it."
6 ...It pleased the king to send me.

...
11 I went to Jerusalem, and after staying there three days, I set out during the night with a few men.  I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem.
...
17 Then I said to them, "You see the trouble we are in; Jerusalem lies in ruin and its gates have been burned with fire.  Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.
18 They replied, "Let us start rebuilding."

(Nehemiah 3 through Nehemiah 5 reflects the builders of the wall and the opposition from the townspeople.)

Nehemiah 6:15  (The completion of the Wall)

15 So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.

Nehemiah 8 (The people rejoice with feasting)

Nehemiah 9 (The people confess their sins)

Nehemiah 10 (The people consecrated themselves to the laws of the Lord as given to Moses)

Nehemiah 11 (The people were separated on who lives "in Jerusalem" the holy city and those who would live in their own towns)

Nehemiah 12:27 Dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem

...
27 At the dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought from Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps, and lyres.

God's 1st  Temple
(King Solomon Builds the Temple
on Mt. Moriah)
(circa 976 BC)
(destroyed 586 BC)

1Kings 6:1
-37
&
2Chronicles 3:1-15

1 In the four hundredth and eightieth year after the Israelites had come out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the Temple of the Lord.
2 The Temple that King Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits long, twenty wide and and thirty high.
...
11 The word of the LORD came to Solomon
12 "As for this Temple you are building, if you follow my decrees, carry out my regulations and keep all my commands and obey them, I will fulfill through you the promise I gave to David your father.
13 And I will live among the Israelites and will not abandon my people Israel."
14 So Solomon built the Temple and completed it.
...
37 The foundation of the Temple of the LORD was laid in the fourth year, in the month of Ziv.
38 In the eleventh year of the month of Bul, the eighth month, the Temple was finished in all its details according to his specifications.  He had spent seven years building it.

The Tabernacle
(circa 1450 BC)

(Tent of Meeting)

The Tabernacle was an ornate place and the center of  worship built by the Israelites during their wanderings in the desert.  They could move it from place to place.  The Israelites completed it in about six months.

According to the Bible, the place of worship was 45 ft. long, 15 ft. wide, and 15. ft high.  It's framework of acacia wood was overlaid in fine gold.  The ceiling was of white linen, with figures of blue, purple, and scarlet angels woven into it.  The structure was covered with a curtain of goat's hair and a layer of skins.  A veil of linen divided the inside into two sections, the Holy of Holies and Holy Place.

The Holy of Holies contained the Ark of the Covenant.  The Ark held the Tables of the Law on which the Ten Commandments were written.

It was called the Ark of the Covenant because it was a symbol of the Jews' covenant (agreement) with God.  Above the Ark was the "mercy seat," a cover of gold with angels at each end, facing each other.

In the Holy Place were the table of shewbread (bread made without yeast), the altar of incense, and the menorah (candlestick /lampstand), all of gold.

The Tabernacle stood within a court, enclosed by rich curtains and brass pillars.  It opened toward the east, and faced the altar where the people brought their sacrifices to be offered by the priests (levites).  The court also contained a laver where the priests washed their hands and feet before entering the Holy Place.

The Tabernacle and its furnishings could be carried from place to place.  It was moved from the desert to Gilgal, then to Shiloh after the Israelites conquered Canaan.  Later it was moved to Nob, then to Gibeon, and finally brought to Jerusalem,. wh
ere its relics were preserved in Solomon's Temple.

Holy of Holies
and The Veil
(Exod 26:31-35)

Tabernacle Furnishings
Holy Place

Ark of the Covenant:
(Exod 25-10-16 & Heb 9:3-4)

10 "Have them make a chest of acacia wood—two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. 11 Overlay it with pure gold, both inside and out, and make a gold molding around it.
12 Cast four gold rings for it and fasten them to its four feet, with two rings on one side and two rings on the other.
13 Then make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold.
14 Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the chest to carry it.
15 The poles are to remain in the rings of this ark; they are not to be removed.
16 Then put in the ark the Testimony, which I will give you.

Altar of Incense:
(Exod 30:1-20 & 34-38)

"1 Make an altar of acacia wood for burning incense.
2 It is to be square, a cubit long and a cubit wide, and two cubits high--it's horns of one piece with it.
3 Overlay the top and all the sides and the horns with pure gold, and make a gold molding around it.
4 Make two gold rings for the altar below the molding--two on opposite sides--to hold the poles used to carry it.
5 Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold.
6 Put the altar in front of the curtain that is before the Ark of the Testimony--before the atonement cover that is over the Testimony--where I will meet with you.
7 Aaron must burn fragrant incense on the altar every morning when he tends the lamps.
8 He must burn incense again when he lights the lamps at twilight so incense will burn regularly before the Lord for the generations to come.
9 Do not offer on this altar any other incense or any burnt offering or grain offering, and do not pour any drink offering on it.
10 Once a year Aaron will make atonement on its horns.  This annual atonement must be made with the blood of the atoning sin offering for the generations to come.  It is most holy to the LORD."

Brazen Altar
(Exod 27:1-8)

1 "Build an altar of acacia wood, three cubits high; it is to be square, five cubits long, and five cubits wide.
2 Make a horn at each of the four corners, so that the horns and the altar are of one piece and overlay the altar with bronze.
3 Make all of its utensils of bronze--its pots to remove the ashes, and its shovels, sprinkling bowls, meat forks and firepans.
4 Make a grating for it, a bronze network, and make a bronze ring at each of the four corners of the network.
5 Put it under the ledge of the altar so that it is halfway up the altar.
6 Make poles of acacia wood for the altar and overlay them with bronze.
7 The poles are to be inserted into the rings so they will be on two sides of the altar when it is carried.
8 Make the altar hollow, out
of boards.  It is to be made just as you were shown on the mountain."

Brazen Laver
(Exod 30:17-21)

17 Then the LORD said to Moses,
18  "Make a bronze basin, with its bronze stand, for washing.  Place it between the Tent of the Meeting, and the altar, and place water in it.
19 Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet with water from it.
20 Whenever they enter the Tent of the Meeting, they shall wash with water so that they will not die.  Also, when they approach the altar to minister by presenting an offering made to the Lord by fire,
21 they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die.  This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come."

Jewish Levite (Priest) Lighting the Lampstand
(Candlestick Menorah)
(Exod 25:31-40)

31 "Make
a lampstand of pure gold and hammer it out, base and shaft; it's flowerlike cups, buds and blossoms shall be of one piece with it.
32 Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lampstand--three on one side and three on the other,
33 Three cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on one branch, three on the next branch, and the same for all six branches extending from the lampstand.
34 And on the lampstand, there are to be four cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms.
35 One bud shall be under the first pair of branches extending from the lampstand, a second bud under the second pair, and a third bud under the third pair--six branches in all.
36 The buds and branches shall be of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold.
37 Then make its seven lamps and set them up on it so that they light up the space in front of it.
38 Its wick trimmers and trays are to be of pure gold.
39 A talent of pure gold is to be used for the lampstand and all these accessories.
40 See that you make them according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.

Table of Shewbread
(Exod 25:23-30)

23 Make a table of acacia wood--two cubits long, a cubit wide, and a cubit and a half high.
24 Overlay it with pure gold and make a gold molding around it.
25 Also make around it a rim a handbreath wide and put a gold molding on the rim.
26 Make four gold rings for the table and fasten them to the four corners where the four legs are.
27 The rings are to be close to the rim to hold the poles used in carrying the table.
28 Make the poles of acacia wood, overlay them with gold and carry the table with them.
29 And make its plates and dishes of pure gold, as well as its pitchers, and bowls, for the pouring out of offerings.
30 Put the bread of the Presence on this table to be before me at all times.

The Tabernacle
