The Holy Spirit is the
Third Member of the
Holy Trinity:

- God (creator), the Father;
- Jesus Christ (the spoken word), the son;
- and the Holy Spirit (the supernatural power that produces the created word).
From the beginning the Holy Spirit (God's Spirit), was and is, the power, behind God's word.
In the Book of Genesis:
1:1...In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the
Spirit of God was over the waters.
3 And God said, "Let there be light" and there was light....
God "spoke" the word, but the Holy Spirit was the
power that "created" what God commanded.
Without the power of God (The Holy Spirit), we are nothing.
In Psalms 139:1-12, David is speaking with God. David is saying that there is nothing he can say or do, hide or even try to speak, that God doesn't know about it. In fact, David says in verse 7, "Where can I go from your
Spirit?"
In Psalms 33:6, David is saying, "By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth."
God spoke it (by his breath), and the
Holy Spirit with his power, created the heavens and their starry host.
If the Holy Spirit does not move, then the word cannot produce.
Without the Holy Spirit, no one can serve God.
All three parts of the Holy Trinity, have been with man.
- God, the Father, was with Adam and Eve, and with Moses;
- Jesus Christ walked the earth (3 1/2 years) in ministry; then,
- The Holy Spirit (after Jesus Christ), is on the earth (specifically, the indwelling, into man).
Without the "breath" of God, the Holy Spirit, who empowers man, we are wasting our time.
The
Holy Spirit is the active and effective agent of the God Head.
Jesus Christ received the
Holy Spirit. He was being baptized in water by John:
"At that time, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan."
(Mark 1:9)
"As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit was descending on him like a dove."
(Mark 1:10)
God was with Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit:
"And a voice came from heaven: 'You are my son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
(Mark 1:11)
Where the Holy Spirit is, there is liberty:
"The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners."
(Isaiah 61:1 & Luke 4:8)
"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
(John 14:26)
Up to this point, the disciples, who followed Jesus, (they walked with him, they talked with him, witnessed miracles, they ate with him, slept with him) had an external relationship with Christ.
This is why they all left when Jesus was arrested, and crucified.
Note, after the resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples:
"Peace be with you!" (John 20:19)
"After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed to see the Lord."
(John 20:20)
"Again, Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."
(John 20:21)
"And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit."
(John 20:22)
In the Book of Acts, Jesus gave the disciples a command:
"Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about."
(Acts 1:4)
"For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
(Acts 1:5)
"...you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;..."
(Acts 1:8)
